Microworlds

We regain the world (and the viewpoint, the perspective) of our childhood, when the world was filled with toys and figurines, enacting complex and imaginative scenarios. We were closer to the small things around us then, and miniaturized works reproduce this alertness, this playful fascination with the worlds infinite possibilities’. (Microworlds, p. 8)

Spring 2014 I bought a copy of Microworlds (written by door Marc Valli en Margherita Dessanay, London, Laurence King, 2011, ISBN 978 1 85669 787 3. I am fascinated by these pictures of miniature dioramas, populated by little dolls and figurines. Lots of new ideas here for my photo hobby. I was much inspired by the front cover photo, by Jason Barnhart. A seemingly simple picture of a little girl doll, standing between three giant mushrooms. It is titled Mushroom forest (2008). Most viewers will be aware of the reference to the famous Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (PDF). (In Chapter V Alice meets a caterpillar sitting on a mushroom. The Caterpillar advises her to eat a piece of mushroom. A piece of one side makes her shrink, a piece of the other side makes her grow taller than the trees. After reading Microworlds, first thing I wanted to do was to produce my own version of this picture: ‘Alice with sliced mushrooms’. With thanks to Jason Barnhart. .
